Japandi Courtyard

The client wanted to transform their small concrete yard with limited light. It was also important to improve the view to the space through the existing, wide folding doors and the kitchen window. The courtyard now combines minimalist design with warm earth tones to create a relaxing sanctuary

Layered materials including cedar wood, terazzo tile and metallic elements work with the foliage to create harmonised texture and visual interest. Weathered Oak Millboard composite wraps around the planters to create a grain-effect broad deck. This connects to the folding doors at floor level, providing the perfect place to spill out of the house and stretch out with a book and a coffee!

A beautiful bespoke potting bench re-uses the client's butler sink and provides additional storage, and a handy post-beach shower is tucked away in a corner, clad in perfectly aligned cedar planks. Deep red tones are echoed across the courtyard from the wall treatment to pops of dark purple and dusky red planting.

Oversized planters in the sunken gravel area create rhythm and anchor the focus and mind  within the space.  This has all been beautifully lit on dimmable spots - we'll update this project with night pictures soon.
